Learn practical techniques to help you identify these barriers and implement effective methods for breaking free from them is the key.

Understanding the Battle Within Your mind: a powerful ally and a formidable adversary.

In our quest for career progression, we must confront the forces hindering our progress. To overcome your inner saboteurs... first, you need to recognise them. Common saboteurs you might be familiar with:

  • Self-Doubt: Questioning your abilities and worth.

  • Perfectionism: Setting unattainably high standards that lead to procrastination.

  • Fear of Failure: Avoiding risks due to the fear of not succeeding.

  • Imposter Syndrome: Feeling like a fraud despite evidence of your competence.

Rather than guessing which are your loudest saboteurs, there is a brilliant free assessment

created by Shirzad Chamine’s (author of New York Times Bestseller Positive Intelligence), the Saboteur Assessment which will unveil your covert agents undermining your career dreams and aspirations. From stress to self-doubt, these saboteurs wield immense influence over your professional journey. Take the Saboteurs Assessment >>

Unmasking the Saboteurs: Your Arch-nemeses

If you've completed the Saboteurs Assessment, you will have now met the Controller, Stickler, Victim, and their colleagues. These saboteurs, forged in the melting pot of childhood survival instincts (to help keep you safe!), now plague your adult psyche, impeding your growth and happiness.

Strategies to Overcome Inner Saboteurs

Here are some effective strategies to combat your inner saboteurs:

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding.

  • Set Realistic Goals: Break down your ambitions into small achievable steps.

  • Challenge Negative Thoughts: Replace self-defeating thoughts with positive affirmations.

  • Seek Support: Surround yourself with mentors, a coach and peers who uplift and encourage you - providing a different perspective.

Overcoming the Influence of your saboteurs

So here's your first step to take back control of you mind...

Now you have awareness of your most vocal saboteurs... let's quiet them. According to Positive Intelligence the #1 difference between star athletes and the runners up is their recovery time. The speed in which they rebound from setbacks and mistakes. Their Mental fitness. It's not strength, speed, agility, training or even motivation. This is the case for all human beings, with anything they are wanting to achieve.

In the immediate moments that follow a setback, stepping out of your comfort zone, or receiving negative feedback, how quickly are you able to re-center your mind? Can you take the learnings from the experience and focus forward?

Can you re-centre mentally and get to the "ready mind" position…

…because here’s the thing.

If you're still upset over the recent negative experience, you won't be able to move forward or be open to future opportunities.

If you don’t recover fast enough, your small mistakes or setbacks can spiral into bigger ones.

How fast is your recovery time?

When you experience a setback - a rejection from a job application, getting negative feedback from your boss, your partner telling you you're too old for a career change, hearing your workmate got the promotion you were gunning for - how long does it take you to re-centre yourself, mentally and emotionally?

The answer depends on the strength of your Saboteurs.

Every Saboteur pounces into action in response to your

mistakes, failures and setbacks in the game of life.

Depending on which Saboteur you’ve got.

…the anxiety-fuelling Saboteurs such as

Hyper- vigilant.

Controller,

Stickler, and

Hyper-Achiever

blow the negative consequences of the setback out of proportion.

The Victim drowns you in self-pity and might even cause you to give up.

The Avoider shields you in denial, resulting in inaction.

Your Saboteurs waste a ton of your mental and emotional energy

which prolongs your recovery.

Our Saboteurs keep us in a cycle of replaying our disappointments and anxieties over and over again…

Disappointment over a setback or mistake is only useful for about 10 seconds until you switch to curiosity about how to learn from it.

Beyond that, it actually hinders your performance.

Whenever you find yourself in a negative feeling or reaction for more than the informative 10 seconds, I encourage you to try this easy practice.

Identify the saboteur, acknowledge the warning or feedback they are giving you. Then move on within 10 seconds.

It will take some practise. You are working towards perfecting your mental fitness.

Now, are you ready to bust the Saboteur lies that cause all your stress, procrastination or imposter syndrome?

You’ll see how much easier life instantly becomes if you can move on after 1-10 seconds.

Conclusion

Overcoming your inner saboteurs is a crucial step towards achieving career fulfilment. By identifying these negative voices, implementing effective strategies, and embracing a growth mindset, you can unlock your true potential and pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career.
